Isla Del Sol

The next morning we got up early, checked out of our hostel and headed down to the water front to catch the 8.30am boat over to Isla Del Sol (the island of the sun). This is a famous and beautiful island on the lake, along with its partner - Isla Del Luna (the island of the moon).
You can actually stay over on the island, either camping or in little guest houses, but we had decided just to go for a day trip. We were eager to get to La Paz and experience the weekend night life (it was already Thursday), even though I still wasn't fully recovered from Cusco - it had only been 2 days!

The boat ride was quite calm but very slow and we arrived on the island around 10.30am.

Our first stop was the north of the island, where there is a hike you can do which takes you to various view points and temple ruins on the way. We had heard good things about it, so set off as soon as we got onto land. Again because of the altitude (we were now at around 4000m), we had to take it pretty slowly as otherwise our lungs felt like they were going to explode. The scenery was lovely and we spent quite a bit of time snapping thousands of photos!

We hiked back to the boat dock and the caught the 1pm boat to the south side of the island, which is more built up than the rural north. Although when I say 'built up', I mean it had about 3 places selling tea and a few shops. Here we relaxed and ate our packed lunch before getting back on the 3.30pm boat back to Copacabana in time to catch our bus to La Paz that evening.

A really nice day and made all the better that Alice and I were together again... Hooray! (By this point, Chanelle had sadly gone home from Lima and Pam was in Ecuador after her teaching job.)
