Where to spend Christmas?

Christmas was soon approaching and the girls and I were thinking about what we wanted to do and where we were going to be to celebrate.

The really busy popular surf town of San Juan Del Sur was on the list as we had heard good things about the party scene and we were sure to be able to buy some home Christmas comforts like cheese and wine!

The morning we left Ometepe we headed to the ferry and then the bus station in Rivas (which was the craziest we had been to so far) with no real idea for where we were headed!

After being harassed to get on almost every bus that was waiting there, we ended up jumping on a bus which went down the Pacific Coast to a tiny beach town called Gigante.

After a super crammed chicken bus ride, we got to a bus stop which seemed like it was in the middle of nowhere. Turns out, it was because the bus drops you off at the highway which is a 5km walk to the beach! It was boiling hot & there were no cars in sight. You can imagine the horror when we realised we may need to walk all the way with our massive backpacks (and after we had hiked the bloody volcano the day before)! Luckily after only a few minutes of walking we managed to hitch hike a lift into town with a cute American family - phew!

Gigante was beautiful (the photos show what we saw immediately on our arrival) but was such a tiny town (if you can even call it that) with 1 shop, a few restaurants and it taking about 5 mins to walk from one end to the other. Not exactly the party atmosphere we had in mind (or so we thought!), but we managed to get a room at the only hostel which was literally right on the beach and you could hear the waves crashing from our room - amazing!
